(Universidad Técnica de Ambato/Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud/Carrera de Medicina, 2021-06-01) Yépez Sellán, Solmayra Patricia; Bustillos Ortiz, Alcides Alberto Ph.D
Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was initially detected at the end of 2019, there is no specific drug established for the treatment and due to its homology with the SARS virus it has been considered as a therapeutic option for remdesivir, several clinical studies and trials with the purpose of applying it in specific clinical therapies for patients diagnosed with COVID-19. In these studies it has been reported that this drug is effective in most of the cases in which it has been used; Despite this, the possible side effects in patients who are treated with it remain a matter of investigation. Objective: To carry out a bibliographic review of the information in the scientific literature published between April 2019 and October 2020 on the use of remdesivir as an antiviral option for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. Materials and methods: A bibliographic review of the articles published in the databases was carried out: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Elsevier, Springer, New England Journal of Medicine. A defined time limit was applied between April and October 2020. The selection of articles was made based on the following criteria: clinical trials, studies with quantitative methodology and bibliographic reviews. Studies with qualitative methodology and studies not accessible to the entire text were excluded. Results and Discussion: 28 scientific articles published in the different aforementioned xii scientific search platforms, published between April and October 2020, were reviewed. The review reports that treatment with remdesivir shows benefits in the clinical course, preventing progression to pneumonia. serious. Conclusion: The results of the different clinical trials, randomized studies and researches analyzed for the realization of this scientific article suggest a notable benefit for the treatment with remdesivir in patients with mild disease due to COVID-19, with benefits in the clinical evolution; thus preventing progression to severe pneumonia and generating improvement in patients treated with this drug. However, its use is limited to patients with severe disease and is still being studied to be used as the drug of choice in this disease due to the possible presence of side effects.
