(Universidad Técnica de Ambato, Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Sociales, Carrera de Trabajo Social, 2025-02-21) Espinoza Villalva, Lenin Leandro; Campoverde Quijano, Egda Maribel
The empowerment of people with disabilities in the field of sports is essential for their full integration into society and their physical and emotional well-being. This research focuses on analyzing the level of empowerment of athletes with disabilities in the Paralympic Committee of Ecuador - Tungurahua, identifying the barriers they face and the factors that influence their participation in sports activities. The general objective is to analyze the level of empowerment of people with disabilities in sports areas, in order to identify the conditions and factors that favor or limit their inclusion in this context. Methodology, this research adopted a mixed approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a broader understanding of the phenomenon. Simultaneous sampling was used, integrating probabilistic and nonprobabilistic methods to collect and analyze data in a comprehensive manner. The study is descriptive and the analytical-synthetic method was used. The study population consisted of 24 athletes from the Paralympic Committee of Ecuador - Tungurahua (14 men and 10 women), and the data were obtained from the official list maintained by the Secretariat. The results show that the empowerment of athletes with disabilities is closely related to accessibility to sports facilities, the support received by the family, society and institutions. Despite advances in inclusion, significant barriers persist, such as lack of accessible infrastructure, low awareness among coaches and peers, and emotional difficulties such as low self-esteem. This affects the full integration of people with disabilities in sport. The research concludes that there are several barriers that limit the empowerment of people with disabilities in sports, such as accessibility difficulties, lack of adapted categories and emotional barriers. In addition, sociodemographic factors such as age, gender and type of disability influence sporting needs and preferences. It is essential to develop policies, inclusive sports programs, ensure a supportive family and social environment, improve available resources to facilitate the active participation of people with disabilities, promoting their empowerment and overall well-being.
