Introduction: Patient safety in the operating room is a constant challenge for surgical nurses due to the high-risk nature of surgical interventions. Poor communication between medical teams and insufficient training can increase the likelihood of adverse events. Methodology: Databases such as Scielo, Virtual Health Library, WHO, Google Scholar and PubMed were used to collect information. The PRISMA method was applied for the classification and selection of studies, reviewing a total of 45 articles, of which 25 were considered relevant for the analysis. Results: The findings indicate that adverse events in surgical settings affect between 3% and 16% of patients. Although the implementation of the Safe Surgery Checklist has proven to be effective in reducing these events, its application faces several challenges, such as lack of training and cultural resistance in some surgical settings. Conclusions: It is clear that while tools and protocols exist to improve surgical safety, their effectiveness depends largely on the ongoing training and commitment of the entire medical team. The review suggests that many adverse events are preventable. It highlights the need to reinforce training and awareness of the importance of safe practices, ensuring the active involvement of all healthcare professionals in surgical safety.
