USO DEL TEST PICTOGRAFIADO DE LAWTON Y BRODY EN LA IDENTIFICACIÓN DE NIVELES DE DEPENDENCIA EN ADULTOS MAYORES
(2025-07-21) Caraguay Chávez, Jessica Carolina; Bonilla Ayala, Josselyn Gabriela; Universidad Técnica de Ambato / Facultad de Ciencias de Salud / Carrera de Fisioterapia
Aging is a progressive physiological process that, over time, favors the appearance of various chronic non-communicable pathologies, which affects the functional capacity of the elderly. In addition, risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, visual impairment and the prevalence of falls accelerate this deterioration. In this context, the Lawton and Brody scale has been widely used to assess functional capacity in instrumental activities of daily living (AIDV). However, its traditional version, based on written questions, has limitations in older adults with reading comprehension difficulties. To overcome these barriers, they have implemented the pictograph version of the test, in order to facilitate the interpretation of the questions and improve the accuracy of the results. The objective was to compare both formats (pictographed and traditional) of the Lawton and Brody test, in order to identify the novices of dependency in a sample of 150 older adults belonging to the "Golden Years" project of the Provincial Board of Pastaza. This research project was non-experimental, since none of the variables will be manipulated, with a quantitative and cross-sectional approach. The results indicated that there are no significant differences between the scores obtained with both versions, which further strengthens the hypothesis that the pictographed scale can be used as an equivalent instrument. Its positive sense in favor of the pictographed version suggests a possible perceptual or comprehensive advantage.

The general objective was to estimate the relationship between rhythmic auditory stimulation and functional dependence in older adults. This is a correlational research since the different tests will be carried out in order to find a relationship between rhythmic auditory stimulation and functional dependence having a quantitative approach and an experimental design, pilot type. A group of older adults was analyzed, where evaluations were applied to measure their functional dependence with the Barthel Index, the Lawton and Brody scale and also the evaluation with Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation. The population constituted a sample of 60 adults over 65 years of age with a mean age of 75 years. The results showed that the functional dependence evaluated with the Barthel Index and the Lawton and Brody scale is related to the rhythmic auditory stimulation with a significance of P=0.000. In conclusion, functional dependence assessed with the Barthel Index had a statistically significant higher relationship with rhythmic auditory stimulation according to the Spearman correlation coefficient of .835, indicating that estimating the frequency to work with rhythmic auditory stimulation should use its relationship with the Barthel Index assessment.

MSc.
Sensory deficits, whether visual, vestibular or proprioceptive, in elderly people can affect the quality of life and the degree of dependence. The main objective of this study was to determine the sensory dependence of motor control and quality of life in older adults of the Sumak Kawsay Wasi Institute of Priority Social Attention of the Provincial Government of Napo. Twenty-three older adults aged 65 years with an average of 75.9 ± 7.2 years from the Sumak Kawsay Wasi Priority Care Institute of the city of Tena participated, where 16 (70%) were women and 7 (30%) were men. Sensory dependence was evaluated with the Romberg test, Timed Up and Go and the Functional Reach test. The WHOQOL-OLD (World Health organization Quality of life-Old) questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. Participants signed the informed consent form and SPSS was used for data analysis. The mean quality of life was 73.04±10.51, 56.5% (13 patients) have high quality of life, while 43.5% (10 older adults) have medium quality of life. We conclude that the visual deficit was more compromised than the vestibular and proprioceptive areas. However, the variables were significantly influential in the quality of life of the older adult.
