The present research project was carried out with the purpose of analyzing the relationship between temporomandibular joint disorders and the practice of wind instruments, the methodology of the study was a non-experimental design, cross - sectional and correlational type of quali-quantitative approach, two evaluations were used, Helkimo's clinical dysfunction index that through the interpretation of frequen t signs and symptoms in temporomandibular disorders allows knowing the level of dysfunction, and Rocabado's pain map that recognizes the painful sensitivity in eight specific zones found in the joint, these evaluations were applied to 40 musicians who are part of the Municipal Band of Ambato and the Symphonic Band of the Honorab l e Provincial Government of Tungurahua. Among the results obtained we found a slight limitation in the opening and sliding of laterotrusion and a severe limitation in mandibular protrusion, also the presence of articular noises and pain in the media l pterygoid and masseter muscles in their deep and superficial bundle, the areas with greater presence of painful sensitivity based on Rocabado's pain map were zones 3, 5 and 6 corresponding to the lateral collateral ligament, posteroinferior synovial and posterosuperior synovial respectively. It is concluded that most of the musicians presented a Helkimo index of moderate level and that the hours of study or practice of the instrument per day is the only factor that has a moderate positive signific a n t relation with the tendency to present a greater index of alteration.

    TRASTORNOS TEMPOROMANDIBULARES PRODUCIDOS EN MÚSICOS
(Universidad Técnica de Ambato/ Facultad de Ciencias de Salud /Carrera de Fisioterapia, 2024-08-28) Medina Guato, Klever Anthony; Peñafiel Luna, Andrea Carolina
Introduction: The study provides a comprehensive view of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in musicians, highlighting its prevalence, risk factors, clinical sympto ms , diagnosis, implications for musical performance, and prevention and managem e n t strategies. Musical activity, which is characterized by intense facial and jaw muscle activity, carries health risks, especially with regard to TMD. Musicians, due to the specifi c physical demands of their activity, are particularly exposed to these disorders. Materi al s and methods: The study was carried out by comparing various bibliographic reviews using a classification of scientific articles, which allowed the development of an analyti c a l method to improve the search for information between the years 2019 and 2023. Results: It is essential to recognize that the burden of musical work and the time dedicated to practice can influence the incidence and severity of TMD in musicians. Therefore, the implementation of training and rest programs is suggested that help adequately manag e the physical and emotional load associated with the intensive practice of musica l instruments. Discussion: Implementing regular breaks during practice sessions and using specific stretching exercises for the jaw and facial muscles can help relieve muscle tension and prevent the buildup of fatigue. Conclusions: These breaks allow musicians to rest and readjust their posture, which can reduce pressure on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and minimize the risk of injury. Additionally, stretching exercises can improve flexibil i t y and muscle endurance, which can help maintain long-term health and proper function of the jaw.
