Family functioning is the systemic relationship established among its members and the interactive capacity to face conflicts based on adaptability, cohesion, affectivity and respect, allowing the progressive development of each of its members; on the other hand, personality traits are considered as persistent patterns that identify each individual in the way he/she acts, feels and thinks. The objective of this research was to determine the relation ship between family functioning and personality traits in adolescents; a quantitative, correlational and nonexperimental cross-sectional design study was carried out; the population consisted of 179 adolescents, 97 females and 82 males with an age range of 14 to 19 years; the Family Functioning FF-SIL questionnaires and the IPDE (International Personality Disorders Examination) DSM-IV Module were applied for data collection. The results showed a negative correlation between family functioning and the following traits: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, schizotypal, antisocial, borderline and avoidant, and a positive correlation between the histrionic trait.
