“Detección del polimorfismo rs 671 presente en el gen que codifica para la enzima aldehído deshidrogenasa 2 (aldh2) y su asociación con la predisposición al alcoholismo en la población de la provincia de Tungurahua.”

Alcoholism is a public health problem that affects individual and social development. It is known that there is a relationship between the predisposition to alcoholism and genetic factors, however, the environment plays a crucial role in the development of this disorder. The objective of this work was to detect the rs671 polymorphism present in the gene that codes for the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 with the purpose of detecting whether or not there is an association with the predisposition to alcoholism in the population of Tungurahua province. The genomic DNA of 47 adult individuals who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed to whom psychological tests were applied, data were taken for the clinical history and signed the informed consent to participate in the study. These samples were analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction technique followed by restriction analysis with the TscAI enzyme. The results obtained indicate that there is a prevalence of the heterozygous G/A genotype with 95.0%, the wild homozygote G/G with 5.0% and 0.0% for the genotype A/A (mutated) in the population studied. However, no statistically significant differences were found between the case and control groups analyzed. In the present study, the Odds Ratio (OR) statistical estimator with a confidence interval of 95% was used; This is how we obtained (1C95 0.82-1.033, OR = 0.92) for the protective genotype and for Cases (1C95 0.46-0.782, OR = 0.60) in which no association was found between the presence of the rs671 polymorphism and the alcoholism.
