This research analyses electrical resistivity as an indirect method to estimate several index and mechanical properties of granular soils, the investigation process included: At first, a macro project was developed, this project includes other four investigations in order to increase the amount of samples; afterwards, a topographic and geologic recognition of the considered zones were done. Inside this zones, forty points were randomly selected, from which ten belongs to the present study, on those points, the field tests were made and the samples were taken. Once the index and mechanical properties results were obtained and the classification of soils were made, various regression analysis, using the least square method, were conducted, from which only the models that presented a logical relationship and higher correlation coefficients were selected. Field and laboratory tests as well as soil sampling were done following the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the American Society for Testing and Materials standards. Twenty four, simple and multiple, correlations are presented as result, the R² values vary from 66% to 94%, proving that electrical resistivity can be used as an economical and fast way to estimate certain granular soils’ properties.

At the beginning of the project, information was researched on preliminary microzonation studies, with the objective of use selected points of these works and corroborating the information presented to have a starting point. A macro project was established to cover 4 areas of the city of Ambato and increase the sample size of the research. To get started the technical part, a route view was made identifying the 40 points selected for the trials, which 10 were divided for each area. The tests were carried out in the field and in turn samples were taken of the points destined to perform laboratory tests contemplating the index and mechanical properties. With the results obtained through the tests, the information was processed by software using the least squares statistical system for the formation of regressions and correlations, which served to establish simple and multiple correlations. The main subjects to form variables were the index and mechanical properties, the electrical resistivity and the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test. Correlation coefficients that meet more than 50 percent were selected and found, coefficients did not reach this value were discarded. Finally, 30 correlations were selected having values of correlation coefficients R2 ranging from 50 to 92 percent, indicating that the electrical resistivity method is a trustworthy, efficient and economical option to evaluate properties of granular soils.

Análisis de las correlaciones entre propiedades índice y mecánicas con la resistividad eléctrica de suelos granulares en la zona 1 de la ciudad de Ambato

The present investigation was made considering ten points of the Huachi Chico Parish of Ambato city, which aims to determine correlations between index and mechanical properties to the electrical resistivity of granular soils among which the moisture content, the granulometry, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, compaction, standard penetration test and CBR; the approach of the hypothesis can be verified by performing the field tests and laboratory. Once the respective tests were made, it was found that the hypothesis is correct and it is possible to establish the correlation between each test performed, then the tabulation, analysis and interpretation of the data was obtained in the field and laboratory work. The values obtained by the tests of resistivity ratios and mechanical properties were analyzed statistically by the least squares method to establish whether there simple correlation or multiple between variables, in some cases not all the points were worked because they generate values waste squares very high relative to the trendline generating a lower correlation. After analyzing the results by the least squares method was established that the determination coefficients vary from 58 percent to 94 percent, indicating that there are good and excellent correlations respectively between the properties. Thus the probability that the index and mechanical properties of soil can be determined by applying the method of electrical resistivity or vice versa occurs.
