The present investigation is an experimental work to determine the correlation between the laboratory CBR and the index and mechanical properties of the granular soils of the Atahualpa and Augusto Martínez parishes of Ambato City. Tungurahua Province To carry out this work, a visit was made to the indicated parishes, identifying three secondary roads per parish, in each way two soil samples of approximately 50kg were obtained, collecting a total of twelve samples for the study of the properties of these soils. The correlations were made using results obtained with field tests such as DCP, Open pit, Field density (Ottawa cone and sand method) and laboratory tests such as Granulometry, Specific Gravity, Plastic Limit, Liquid Limit, Modified Proctor “B” and California Support Relationship (CBR). The correlations are obtained through statistical methods with least squares, applying to two and three variables. Where the best correlations were with the CBR. The results obtained from these correlations are applied in the pavement design, finding reliable CBR values.

At the beginning of the project, information was researched on preliminary microzonation studies, with the objective of use selected points of these works and corroborating the information presented to have a starting point. A macro project was established to cover 4 areas of the city of Ambato and increase the sample size of the research. To get started the technical part, a route view was made identifying the 40 points selected for the trials, which 10 were divided for each area. The tests were carried out in the field and in turn samples were taken of the points destined to perform laboratory tests contemplating the index and mechanical properties. With the results obtained through the tests, the information was processed by software using the least squares statistical system for the formation of regressions and correlations, which served to establish simple and multiple correlations. The main subjects to form variables were the index and mechanical properties, the electrical resistivity and the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test. Correlation coefficients that meet more than 50 percent were selected and found, coefficients did not reach this value were discarded. Finally, 30 correlations were selected having values of correlation coefficients R2 ranging from 50 to 92 percent, indicating that the electrical resistivity method is a trustworthy, efficient and economical option to evaluate properties of granular soils.

The main objective of this experimental work is to propose a road conservation management system based on the physical characteristics of the road: Cevallos-Quero on the stretch from the abscissa K5 + 800 to the abscissa K9 + 100 of the province of Tungurahua. Mechanical equipment was used in materials testing and soil mechanics laboratories to determine the deflection of the pavement in specific areas of the Cevallos-Quero road, as well as open pit exploration (PCA) to obtain samples for Laboratory analysis: Granulometry, Consistency Limits, Density (Proctor), Abrasion and California Support Value (CBR) applying the standards: American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), The Ecuadorian Standards Institute (INEN) ) and the American Materials Testing Association (ASTM). Directly on the road grade, the surface and structural evaluation of the pavement was carried out applying the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and Benkelman Beam Analysis method to determine the condition index of the pavement, Deflection and radius of curvature of the pavement structure. properties with which the current situation of the tread layer on the track and behavior of the pavement structure was assessed. The reason for the premature deterioration of the road surface is due to the fact that the thickness of the layers of the pavement structure is insufficient, which no longer meets the required quality standards. Therefore, it was determined that it is not feasible to perform a road conservation plan to rehabilitate the structure of the road surface and considering the current state of the road, it is necessary to reinforce the pavement structure on the road: Cevallos-Quero on the section from the abscissa K5 + 800 to the abscissa K9 + 100 of the province of Tungurahua. This reinforcement has a referential budget of $ 650,014.21 without including the value of IVA.
