Currently, in the soil mechanics laboratories of Ecuador, the Casagrande cup method is the best known to determine the liquid limit of the soils standardized by ASTM D4318, while some countries use the Cone Penetrometer established by British Standard BS 1377-2:1990. A comparative analysis was carried out between these methods and not having this equipment to perform the tests in the laboratory, was designed and assembled at the INDUACCS company in Ambato, according to the specifications of BS 1377-2:1990 standard, then test trials were conducted that provided adequate results. For the tests, soil samples were taken in the 18 parishes of Ambato canton, obtaining a total of 30 specimens, which were used for laboratory tests; with the results was made a comparative statistical analysis between the values of the liquid limit obtained by testing the Casagrande cup and the Cone Penetrometer, for this analysis was applied the statistical method of minimum squares. Based on the results and analysis, it demonstrated that the alternative method using the Cone Penetrometer built in this research, is acceptable to obtain liquid limit values of granular soils, it is also important to mention that the methods have a strong positive correlation (r = 0.8228).

In this research work, 30 samples of fine soils were used, which were extracted from different sectors of the city of Puyo, in order to perform a comparative analysis among liquid limit values using the Casagrande cup method (ASTM D 4318-2010) and the Cone Penetrometer method (British standard BS 1377-2: 1990). The last equipment (not available in the laboratory) was manufactured according the specifications of the mentioned standard. In addition, Atterberg limits, plasticity index, SUCS and AASHTO classifications and specific gravity of each of the samples were determined, to correlate them each other. Once the results of the tests were obtained, the data was tabulated, analyzed and interpreted. In order to verify the hypothesis raised, statistical methods were used to determine the level of correlation of the liquid limit values obtained by both methods. Thus, the hypothesis is fulfilled by presenting a good correlation coefficient of 0.81. In this way, the use of the ‘manufactured’ cone penetrometer is considered as a feasible and alternative method for obtaining liquid limit of fine soils. The correlation equation is LL cone = 1.13 LL cup - 2.10. Besides, conversion factors of 0.9179 and 0.9199 were determined to approximately calculate LLcup knowing the value of LLcone.

The present technical work proposes the implementation of a road conservation model, because the Ambato-Tisaleo road is a communication link between these two cantons and it does not have a road maintenance plan that serves to postpone the useful life of the pavement structure. For the present work a visual evaluation of the surface of the structure was carried out, this method is known as Pavement Condition Index (PCI), which allows to evaluate the type of failure, classify it according to the level of severity and determine in what state is the surface layer of the flexible pavement. The Benkelman Beam being a non-destructive test, which by means of the deflections given by a team dial, allows to know the behavior of the pavement and the subgrade. The Ambato-Tisaleo route in the section given by abscissa 0 + 000 to abscissa 3 + 200 consists of two types of deflections which are: Type I and Type III. When carrying out 4 open pit wells, 50 kg of soil was extracted to perform the following tests: Atterberg Limits, Granulometry, Modified Proctor Type B and CBR, these tests served to classify the soil type and determine that the soil is in a range Good to Regular for subgrade use. When using the methodology already described above, it was concluded that periodic maintenance should be performed from abscissa 0 + 000 to abscissa 1 + 600, while from abscissa 1 + 600 to abscissa 3 + 200 a routine maintenance should be performed, this is due to the current state of it.

The road conservation process is applied on the Patate -Píllaro road, section 5 that corresponds from km 15 + 320 to km 19 + 150 of the Píllaro canton of Tungurahua province. From the traffic study, the current TPDA of the road is 2666 vehicle / day, classifying an Order II type Collector road that collects all the traffic from the neighborhood roads, as well as the parishes of San Miguelito Emilio Terán. For the visual evaluation of the surface, the PCI Flexible Flooring methodology is applied, which is a simple, economical and easy to apply method, it evaluates the superficial state of the road by means of the Pavement Condition Index that shows the damage class, level of severity and density. The beam Benkelman evaluates the structural behavior of the road, this test is the type of non-destructive and easy to apply, with this method, the behavior of the subgrade is good, but the behavior of the pavement structure is bad, you must have that the road studied does not have an adequate pavement structure, as far as this method is concerned, pits have been made to respect the study of soils. In the study of the floors it is verified that the properties that have the base of the structure of the pavement, do not fulfill the specifications of the MTOP, but the characteristics of the subgrade are good to settle a structure of the pavement. Carried out the process that proposes this model of road conservation, the reconstruction of the Patate - Píllaro road is made, section 5 that corresponds to km 15 + 320 to km 19 + 150.
